Burnie Joyce - Book Launch

“Sale-O and Smokos” Book launch
Monday 7th May 2018
Santa Gertrudis Marquee Site C208
Beef Australia, Rockhampton.

Gyranda celebrated its’ “50th Year of On-property Santa Gertrudis Bull Sales” in 2018. To celebrate this auspicious occasion we are launching a limited edition Coffee Table book.
This 240 page, hard covered, glossy album containing hundreds of colour photographs, articles, anecdotes, interesting stories and even poetry.
We feel this captures the essence of our life, the Queensland cattle industry and living in the outback over the last half century and before. It depicts the people, the history and the way of life we have experienced throughout this half century…. done with a touch of humour, all supported by a photographic record we are proud of. This should be a good read and interesting historic record.
I always thought I had a story to tell, coming from the very south of Victoria to outback Queensland, to marry a man I had only been in the company of for a mere 14 days, albeit over eighteen months. Yes, I could ride a horse. Yes I lived living in the country. But this was a far cry from what I was accustomed to. We had owned 240 acres at Pearcedale, on the Mornington Peninsular. I remember thinking that if I rode over the hill on Gyranda, a 23,000 acre station, that I would get lost and not know my way home!
The adjustments required and humorous incidents are all part of a life lived to the full. I look back over this book and think how lucky I was to meet and marry Burnett. What an interesting life we have led. If anyone had foreseen that I would live in a remote area of Queensland, (with very marginal telephone, postal and internet reception), would home school our 4 children, become involved in Distance Education, learn Spanish, become a foreign correspondent for the US Tribune, and have to deal with staff in those early years, I would have thought they had rocks in their head.
Fast forward that to 2018 and after a life lived in the fast track, we have handed our operations on to our children, have stepped back a bit, and now help all our children in their ventures, be it mustering, fencing or baby-sitting.
This year Burnett and I were given a regional award of “Modern Pioneers”. Quote “the term modern being utilized to highlight the ongoing innovation, trail-blazing and unique work that is being undertaken throughout Regional Queensland to continually build the area and it’s industries, ensuring their relevance in today’s world.” (Shanna Muston)
I hope you enjoy our story. Even for our closest friends there will be some surprises.
I would like to thank the 10 sponsors I approached to enable me to produce an attractive, affordable coffee table book that we are excited about. Thanks to the major sponsor GDL, and other sponsors Queensland Country Life, Elders Ltd, ABRI, the University of Queensland Veterinary School, Thynne & Macartney, UHY Haines Norton, Rabobank, Holmes Enterprises and fm studios. Their support has been outstanding.
Well known Journalist and Landline Presenter, Pip Courtney has kindly agreed to officiate for us. Over the years we have had some amusing incidents following the showing of footage shot on Gyranda as well as some sensitive issues that Pip has prepared and handled professionally. We have great admiration for her. “
We invite you all to attend this book launch on Monday 7th May 2018 at 4.30pm, at the Santa Gertrudis Marquee, Site C208 at Beef Australia. The book will be available for purchase for the duration of Beef 2018, at this site. For those not able to attend, but wishing to purchase “Sale-O and Smokos”, please contact us.
